Ed Week’s Web Resource on Dual Language Education

This week I would like to highlight two resources on Dual Language Education:

1. Ed Week’s Section on Dual Language Education by Leslie A. Maxwell. This webpage summarizes current research on dual language education programs better known as two-way bilingual education programs where 50% of students are English dominant and 50% are Spanish dominant (or other language) and the curriculum is provide equally in both languages. This webpage has videos, articles, and latest research on the benefits of this type of education programs that is on the rise in the US (it seems silly to say this part as Europe works very much this way and kids learn more than 2 language most of the time). 2. Diary of a Bilingual School is the second resource I am highlighting this week. The book is an account of a dual language program over a year. Informal Reading inventory Spanish-English by Flynt and Cooter

This 1999 informal reading inventory called the “English-Espanol Reading Inventory for the Classroom” is a great tool for any teacher that has bilingual and ELL students in her/his classroom. According to the authors this IRI is intended for bilingual (Spanish-English)classroom teachers and special educators. It was constructed with native Spanish-speaking children in mind. Their focus is to provide teachers with information on how to guide the kind of teaching and classroom interventions from the results/outcome of the English-Espanol Reading Inventory for the Classroom (EERIC) in areas related to specific needs of children in bilingual or ELL classes, assessment of pre-reading skills, use of decoding strategies, reading aspects of print, focus on story elements and content elements, literal and higher order thinking/comprehension skills and miscue recording for ndetermining specific/diagnostic information for instruction. This book is an excellent resource for special educators, school psychologists, regular education teachers, and case workers working with a diverse student population. This book focuses on the assessment process of English Language Learners (ELL) for eligibility for special education services. The book has three main points that make it so practical and effective. The first, the authors provide an in-depth explanation of the Multidimensional model they developed that allows all school professionals to look at children using various factors children bring into our educational system, Second the book addresses issues of disproportionate representation, acculturation, migration, culture, bilingualism and the pre-referral process in ways that are easy to understand for practitioners. The third is that the book provides reproducible worksheets, questionnaires that address acculturation, diversity and academic progress, and checklist ready to use. Feel free to post about this book.
